RESEARCH GROUP METHODS OF STUDY OF THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

The Autonomic Nervous System is the critical component of a complex neural network involved in maintaining the delicate dynamic equilibrium that distinguishes all living systems. The relevance of the functions that it plays in the organization and coordination of the organs and tissues functions has interested many scientists that have developed different investigations oriented to evaluate it activity in various conditions. Thus, it was not until it has been reach the adequate development in the informatics technologies that it has been possible to quantify in a more adequate way the function of this control system. The reason for this is that, for their study, it is necessary to reach great precision and accuracy in the measurement of different physiological variables; that the methods employ for it study, generate a great volume of data that requires to dispose of mediums for it storage and that it is indispensable the use of specialized software pointed to the adequate processing and analysis of the whole available information. That's why the study of the function of the Autonomic Nervous System is a thematic, object not only of Neurophysiology, but also involves Computational Science, so the success of the researches made in this field requires of the coordinated interaction of this two areas of knowledge.

Methods of study of the ANS

The methods most widely used for the assessment of Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) function are those that measure an end-organ response in different physiological conditions. In this way, the evaluation of cardiovascular autonomic function is the cornerstone of the investigation of autonomic function. In addition, the measurement of cardiovascular function has become an essential tool in research studies. For that, the most widely accepted procedure is the measurement of Heart Rate Variability.
